Farmers market moves inside the mall
Familiar vendors will be present
Published Friday, November 6, 2009
The Albert Lea Farmers Market will move inside Northbridge Mall next week.
Verlys Huntley, president of the Farmers Market Board of Directors, said more than 20 vendors have indicated they are interested in bringing their produce and products inside the mall.
The first day for the indoor market will be on Wednesday.
Though there won’t be as wide of a variety of produce as there is during the summer months, there will be some fruits and vegetables, along with baked items and crafts, Huntley said.
There should be onions, potatoes and squash there for sure, along with one or more of the meat producers and other vendors with baked items, she said. K&K Bakery will have a table, and there should be apples, farm fresh eggs, jams, jellies and maple syrup.
“It should be a pretty good representation of what we had at the other market,” Huntley said.
Huntley said she knew about other area farmers markets that moved inside during the winter months, and when she was approached by Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Susie Petersen about doing it in Albert Lea, she wondered how receptive the vendors would be.

She went around and polled the vendors and got a lot of positive feedback.
“It sounds like there will be quite a few people with products to sell,” Huntley said.
Vendors will more than likely set up on the northeast end of the mall near the food court and then spread out into the mall.
The market will be open during its usual Wednesday hours from 4 to 6 p.m. at least in November and December, she noted.
In a column last week, Huntley stated this summer has been a record-breaking season for the Albert Lea Farmers Market. Not only have there been more vendors than ever before, but there’s also been more customers seeing the benefit of buying locally grown products, she wrote.
More nonprofit groups are also finding the market to be a good place to promote their organizations.
“We are a meeting place, where you can meet your friends, or make new friends,” Huntley wrote. “We are not just a farmers market, we are a community market or gathering place.”

I think this is a good idea for the farmers market to still have an avenue to sell there products without being outside on the colder days.
